Nota Bene - Phi Theta Kappa's Annual Honors Anthology

What is the deadline for the next issue of Nota Bene?

The deadline for the 2008 Nota Bene is December 5, 2008.

What is Nota Bene?

Nota Bene, Latin for "note well," is Phi Theta Kappa's honors anthology. It recognizes outstanding writing of Phi Theta Kappa members and demonstrates to the literary public the academic excellence and commitment to scholarship found at two-year colleges. The first issue of Nota Bene was published in 1994; it has been published annually ever since.

Who can submit entries to Nota Bene?

Only Phi Theta Kappa members may submit manuscripts, and manuscripts should be submitted while a member is enrolled in an associate-degree program.

What can be submitted?

Qualitative and quantitative research papers, poetry, short stories, essays and drama are accepted for consideration.

Due to the large volume of submissions, manuscripts can not be returned, nor can members be notified when manuscripts arrive at Society Headquarters. If members require proof of arrival, please send manuscript(s) Return Receipt Requested.

No single entry may exceed 2,500 words.

Can a member submit more than one entry in more than one category?

A member can enter as many manuscripts as he or she wishes, in as many categories.

Download the Nota Bene Submission Form. (required for each entry).
An entry with an incomplete submission form will not be judged. All requested information must be supplied.

Nota Bene Plagiarism Policy

All works submitted to Nota Bene must be the work of the author. If a work submitted is determined to be plagiarized from any source, the following steps will be taken:
  • The member who submitted the plagiarized works will be notified by letter of the incidence of plagiarism, with proofs supplied.
  • The plagiarized submission and any other submission by that member will be disqualified from consideration for publication in Nota Bene.
  • The member's chapter advisor and college president will be notified by letter of the incidence of plagiarism, and proof will be supplied to each of them.

Where should manuscripts be sent?

Entries should be mailed to:

Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society of the Two-Year College
Center for Excellence
Attn: Nota Bene
1625 Eastover Drive
Jackson MS 39211

Although each Nota Bene entry requires a separate submission form, multiple entries from one author should be mailed in the same package when possible, to cut postage costs.

Due to the large volume of submissions, manuscripts can not be returned, nor can members be notified when manuscripts arrive at Society Headquarters. If members require proof of arrival, please send manuscript(s) Return Receipt Requested.

How are entries judged?

Following the deadline for submissions, entries to the Nota Bene competition are sorted into the categories of essay, short story, poetry, or research paper. Statistics are noted, including the total number of entries, total entries from each region, total number of members submitting, and total members submitting from each region.

Copies of entries are then distributed to 12 judges, separated by category according to the judge’s area of expertise. The first round of judging is an elimination round, in which a total of 100 entries are selected to be judged by the Nota Bene jury. Judges for the competition are volunteers with experience as professional educators, journalists, and writers.

Round two of the judging process is conducted by the Nota Bene jury. As many as 30 entries total, in any combination of the categories, may be selected for publication.

Are awards given to Nota Bene authors?

The author of the manuscript judged most outstanding will receive the Citation Scholarship, a stipend of $1,000. Authors of four manuscripts will be named recipients of Reynolds Scholarship Awards, stipends of $500 each. These awards are endowed by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. They honor the memory of the late Donald W. Reynolds, founder of the Donrey Media Group.

Members whose works have been selected for publication will be notified by phone. After all winners have been notified a list of winning entries will be posted on the Phi Theta Kappa website. Members whose entries have been selected to be published retain the rights to their work.

Who receives Nota Bene?

Nota Bene is mailed to chapter presidents, advisors, college presidents and college libraries.
